Calgary Garage Sale Day is an annual civic event coordinated through calgarygaragesale.com. Every year on the third Saturday of May, we encourage every Calgary household with stuff to sell to post a sale on the same day. Hunters get one map, one weekend, the entire city.
The third Saturday of May is the right date for Calgary. The snow's been gone for six weeks. Garages have been shoveled out. The chinook season is winding down. Spring cleaning has happened in earnest. People want to drive around with the windows down and look at other people's old stuff. Stampede is still seven weeks away — the city has time and attention to spare.
The three rules of the day.
One map, one Saturday.
Every Calgary garage sale on the same day, indexed on calgarygaragesale.com. Hunters drive a route. Sellers don't compete with three other weekends.
Block sales encouraged.
Neighborhoods that organize multi-house blocks get a special "block sale" pin and discounted listing tier. Whitehorn, Bridgeland, Inglewood — the blocks that already do this informally get formalized.
Donation pickup, end of day.
Anything not sold by 4pm gets connected to local pickup partners (Diabetes Canada, Made by Momma, Goodwill). Sellers don't haul it back into the basement. Charities get an annual stocking event.
Why we're doing this.
Garage sales work better at scale. A single house putting out a Saturday sale gets foot traffic from people in the neighborhood. The same house putting out a sale on a coordinated city-wide day, with a map that thousands of Calgarians are watching that morning, gets foot traffic from across town.
Most cities don't do this. Some neighborhoods do — Lake Bonavista runs a fantastic Parade of Garage Sales every year. We're proposing to scale that idea citywide. Less coordinated than a parade, more coordinated than the random Saturday norm.
It's also good for the city. Items that would otherwise hit landfill get bought, given, or donated. Neighbours meet each other (a thing Calgarians don't do enough of). The city feels like a small town for one Saturday.
For sellers.
Standard tier pricing applies on the day, but there's a discount for early-bird block-sale registrations. The Bronze ($5) tier is free on Calgary Garage Sale Day for any household participating in a 3+ house block sale. Estate sale companies pay normal Estate Pro tier ($50) and get top-of-map placement throughout the day.
Registration for the 2027 day opens January 1, 2027. We'll send out a reminder via the Friday Roundup newsletter in February.
For hunters.
The Saturday Drive route planner is available all day. Pick five sales in your quadrant, get an optimized loop with ETAs and coffee/donut stops along the way. Check in at each one — Calgary Garage Sale Day check-ins count double on the leaderboard.
The hunter who logs the most check-ins on the day gets crowned Hunter of the Day in the following Friday's roundup, plus a $50 gift card to a local bookstore (Pages on Kensington, Owl's Nest, or Shelf Life — winner's choice).
For partners.
Local sponsors interested in being part of Calgary Garage Sale Day 2027 — moving companies, donation pickup services, local cafes for the donut stops, U-Haul or similar — email partners@calgarygaragesale.com. We're looking for 6-8 partner brands for the inaugural year.
The long arc.
Calgary Garage Sale Day is built to become an institution. Year one (2027) we'll be small — 200-400 sales, mostly the Calgary core. Year three we should be at 1,000+ sales citywide. Year five it should be on the city's calendar the way the Stampede Parade is — a thing Calgarians plan their May around.
Civic events take a decade to become traditions. We're starting the clock now.
